A taste of what community council can do
Across Edinburgh, community councils are driving change, addressing local concerns, and enhancing neighbourhoods. Here are just a few examples of their inspiring work:
Merchiston people making a difference
"It's easy to be cynical and say the ºÚÁÏÉç doesn’t listen, but our experience has been different. With community engagement and support from ward councillors, we’re making real changes for people walking, wheeling, and cycling in Polwarth," says Vanessa Meadu of Merchiston Community ºÚÁÏÉç.
Vanessa also talked positively about their leaf clearing project: “Since 2021, Merchiston Community ºÚÁÏÉç has tackled leaf clearing with a volunteer-led initiative, growing from 43 to 58 active volunteers. The project helps prevent flooding and slip hazards, with nearly 1,000 bags of leaves collected in recent years. Its success has even inspired Craiglockhart Community ºÚÁÏÉç to explore a similar initiative.”

Campaign to restore the 69 bus
“For five years, residents of Lady Nairne have campaigned to bring back the much-needed 69 bus service. After extensive community consultation through coffee mornings, surveys, and meetings, local ward councillors unanimously supported the push for its return. The fight continues to restore this essential service for elderly and disabled residents,” explained Margaret Bennett, Northfield & Willowbrae Community ºÚÁÏÉç’s Engagement Officer.
Protecting the local environment
Secretary of Fairmilehead Community ºÚÁÏÉç Colin Anderson described how they have made sure there’s responsible development of their area:
“Over the years, Fairmilehead Community ºÚÁÏÉç has achieved significant wins for the community, including making sure proper road safety measures in Buckstone Estate, opposing the demolition of Comiston Farmhouse and securing a pedestrian crossing on Buckstone Terrace.
Our proactive engagement with Scottish Water, Cala Homes, and David Wilson Homes has also ensured responsible development in the area.”
